How Politics Affect Climate Change

There are many things you can do to help with the big issue of climate change.  One big thing is voting for politicians.  These people have a lot of power and can make some of these changes happen.

In an article from ABC News about things you can do to prevent climate change, they shared that the Trump administration, for instance, has rolled back 85 environmental protections since 2017, including several on drilling and emissions, The New York Times reported. (Jacabo)

This is ridiculous.  Why are we going back?  We need these policies and protections. Because of this, many states took matters in their own hands.  For example in New York, they passed a legislation that would make the state carbon neutral by 2050. (Jacabo)

"This bill requires New York to get 70% of its electricity from renewable sources like wind, solar, and hydro power by 2030."  With all of these things to help get their pollution levels so low it would become a net-zero economy which is the goal of most environmentalists. (McKinnley and Plumer)

Another state that has done a lot to help improve some of the waste we give off is California.  They set a Global Warmings Solution Act in 2006.  This set a statewide limit on greenhouse emissions.  Since then, they have raised their goal to have greenhouse emission to be 40% below what it was in 1990 by 2030.  ("California leads fight to curb climate change"). This makes a lot of sense that California is one of the only states that has taken any charge, because it has been affected a lot by climate change.  There have been many fires because of the heat and dryness.

We need more states to take charge.  If the President won't make a change, then it is up to the lawmakers in your state.  The US creates a huge portion of carbon in the atmosphere.  5.1 billion metric tons have been produced by the US alone.  There is 32.5 billion metric tons of carbon in the world.  The US makes up 4.7% of the worlds population. (Climate Change Indicators: U.S. Greenhouse Gas Emissions.)

After learning about this issue I realized there are many things you can do to help climate change.  One of the most simple ones is voting for someone that sees it as a big issue and wants to make a change.  If we don't do this nothing else will matter when the whole world is on fire.

  1. Stella, your focus on the political choices people can make are discussed well. Clear ideas and good specific details.

How close is California to meeting their goal?

  2. Hi Stella, sorry my comment is late, I didn't realize we were supposed to write two comments. After reading your blog I realize that voting is a big part in helping climate change. I'm curious about what you think is another way to help stop climate change? What other thing do you think is important? I loved your blog and can't wait to read it next week.

    1. There are many other ways to help stop climate change. I focused on voting in this blog but there are other things you can do. You can use less gas, recycle, use more renewable sources of energy, etc.
